Experimental Question: Does calcium have an impact on the reaction time of the leaflets of the Mimosa pudica?
Hypothesis: The influx of calcium within the Mimosa pudica will decrease the reaction time of the plant’s leaflets to a physical stimulus alluding to the presence of possible Ca2+ driven transport mechanism, such as an actin-myosin interaction within the plasmodesmata.
- Experimental A (less calcium) Hypothesis: Experimental group A has a longer reaction time than the Control group.
- Experimental B (more calcium) Hypothesis: Experimental group B has a shorter reaction time than the Control group.
Experimental A vs ControlH₀: µ₁= µ₂ This is my null hypothesis, or the hypothesis that states no difference between variables. H₁: µ₁< µ₂ This is my alternative hypothesis, in this case, my alternative hypothesis is my claim because I want there to be a difference. The difference I want is µ₁ (control) to be less than µ₂ (experimental A). I conducted a left-tailed t-test for two samples assuming unequal variance. I did this at an alpha level of .05 or confidence level of 95%. That implies I am 95% confident in my results. Using Excel, I calculated my t Stat and critical value. t=-2.3857 CV=-1.663649 My test value falls within my critical region. Therefore, I am able to reject the null and there is enough evidence to support my claim. | Experimental B vs ControlH₀: µ₁= µ₂ This is my null hypothesis, or the hypothesis that states no difference between variables.
